Episode 15: Dad on Shared Parental Leave, with Joe Young

Shared Parental Leave – where the mum is able to give up some of her maternity leave to her partner – became a legal right in 2015. In theory, this made it much easier for dads to take additional leave from work and spend time with their child.

5 years on, and the take-up rate is pretty low. Like, 2% low. So if dads want to spend more time with their kids (hint: they do), and the law has changed to allow this (it has), and employers are offering it (they are)… what’s the problem?
